Kim Ja-in earns silver at Climbing World Cup

By Baek Byung-yeul Korea's top female climber Kim Ja-in claimed her first medal of the season when she finished second

at the International Federation of Sports Climbing World Cup in Chamonix, France, Thursday. Kim, 28, was one of three climbers who reached the top of the wall in the finals of the women's lead climbing event, but remained second behind Slovenia's Janja Garnbret, 18, who was the first-placed climber in the semifinals. In lead climbing, competitors attempt to scale a 15-meter wall in eight minutes. Their performances are rated by the highest hold they reach. In the case of a tie, the climber's rank from the previous round is taken into account. Kim was the first-placed climber in the qualification round and fourth in the semifinals, while Garnbret was first in the semis. "I am glad I could reach the top of the wall in the final," Kim said through her agency All That Sport. "I will try to stay in shape for the remaining events." For the past decade, Kim has been one of the top climbers here. She won the 2014 IFSC Climbing World Championships and claimed the IFSC Climbing World Cup series overall title in 2010 and 2015. Kim last year revealed her intention to compete at the Olympics after sport climbing was approved as one of the new events for the 2020 Tokyo Games.
