My GoPro Life

We strapped tiny, high-powered cameras onto four people who lead remarkable lives. Have a

look. MORE FROM THE VIDEO ISSUE Timeline: The Complete History Of Video How Kawehi Turned The Music Industry Inside-Out I Was A War Reporter For A Day YouTube GoPro Sep 5, 2017 On social media, people present the life they want you to think they have. It's only when real people attach a video camera to their heads that you see what a day truly looks like. We asked people to do just that: Take the lightweight, waterproof GoPro HERO5 Black and a lot of batteries, hit record, and . . . that's it. No poses, no filters, no retakes. One day and several maxed-out 128-GB SanDisk micro SD cards later, we felt we had lived in someone else's shoes for a day. Kind of. CHEF Seamus Mullen, acclaimed New York–based chef, goes to L.A. to launch his new cookbook, Real Food Heals. He starts his day with a three-hour bike ride around Old Mulholland before preparing chimichurri for 60. NOTABLE MOMENT: When Mullen climbs on stage, dozens of faces turn toward him—and the camera. The lights are overbright, the mic right in your face. The people clap, and you experience one one-thousandth of the sensation of having a modicum of celebrity. SANITATION WORKER Nobody sees New York like the Department of Sanitation sees New York: street by street, bin by bin. DSNY worker Michael Arboleda wears his camera on a night shift in Queens, working the finicky in-house gas pump and cracking jokes with his shift partner. NOTABLE MOMENT: Off-shift, Arboleda does a punishing CrossFit workout. You'll never again underestimate the strength his job requires. FOREST RANGER Nick Meyers's office is Mt. Shasta, a 14,179-foot potentially active volcano in northern California. His work bag includes rope, carabiners, a head lamp, an ice axe, and a first-aid kit. Plus skis. NOTABLE MOMENT: Meyers slides over to a group of young men standing on a patch of rock, looking down into the clouds. "Whose drone?" he asks in a California drawl. "No drones in the wilderness, man." A kind of meta video moment. TUBA PLAYER Principal tuba player for the Boston Symphony Orchestra Mike Roylance takes his GoPro to the season's first concert—his 15th year with the BSO—at the Tanglewood Music Center in the Berkshire Hills. NOTABLE MOMENT: Roylance coaches a young tubist on his audition for the West Point band. "Dah-guh-dah-guh-dah-guh-dah," he says. "Not ta-ka-ta-ka." The guy looks right at the camera, like you're the one telling him. He nods. He gets it. And for a moment, you are a tubist. WANT MORE POPULAR MECHANICS? GET INSTANT ACCESS!
