Smart Rings Put Music at Your Fingertips

Specdrums ring is a smart ring that wirelessly connects to a smartphone running a accompanied

app and transforms taps into sounds. The system is designed for people who express their inner rhythm drumming with their fingers anywhere on tabletops, on any surface or object. The system recognizes different colors, putting a symphony of digital sound possibilities at a tapper’s fingertips. The initial project was designed to give freedom to drummers play anywhere, later project evolved to reflect system’s ability to transform colors into sounds. The ring is paired to a smartphone via a accompanied and RGB values are returned to the color sensor when the tap-activated LED shines and these values are then matched to digital sounds in the app’s library. Those sounds could be keys on a piano, components of a drum kit or other synthesized noise. Users can play anything, bang out any rhythms by tapping a finger with the ring onto colors. The system supports multiple simultaneous notes being sounded. Battery life is reported to be over 2 hours per charge, with a recharge taking just 30 minutes. A 12 key color chart is included into the Specdrums package. The project is already funded on the Kickstarter and if all goes to plan, shipping is estimated to start in January 2018. The pitch video below gives more on the project.
