This 80-Second Flight Is the Shortest Commercial Route on Earth

The shortest flight on Earth lasts a mere 80 seconds, connecting two remote Scottish islands

that are only 1.7 miles apart. The eight-seat airplane used for the flight only gets up to 350 feet and goes about 150 miles per hour on its 80-second journey. These airports, on Westray and Papa Westray, are part of the Orkney Islands, a group of 70 sparsely populated islands. Only a few of the islands are inhabited, making it too expensive to build bridges. That means that the easiest way to get between these little islands is flying. The Westray to Papa Westray flight has been going for 50 years now. For most of us, flying on a tiny plane like this would be nerve-wracking, but residents of the islands use it like a bus system to get to their jobs or see friends.
